Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan (born 27 December 1965), known professionally as Salman Khan, is an Indian actor, film producer, and television personality who predominantly works in Hindi-language films. Often referred to as "Bhai" by his fans and "Tiger" in the industry, he is one of the most commercially successful actors in the history of Indian cinema and ranks among the world's highest-paid entertainers.

Early Life & Family

Salman Khan was born on 27 December 1965 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, into a family deeply embedded in Indian cinema. His father, Salim Khan, is one of the most celebrated screenwriters in Bollywood, famous for his legendary partnership with Javed Akhtar. His mother, Sushila Charak (known as Salma Khan after converting to Islam), is a homemaker. He has two brothers — Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan — both of whom are also actors and filmmakers.

Khan grew up in Bandra, Mumbai, where he attended the St. Stanislaus High School. He later enrolled at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai but left before completing his degree to pursue an acting career. His grandfather was a Congress politician from Madhya Pradesh, and his step-grandmother is actress Helen, known for her iconic item numbers in Hindi films.

Early Career (1988–1994)

Salman Khan made his acting debut with a minor role in the 1988 film Biwi Ho To Aisi. His first lead role came with Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), directed by Sooraj Barjatya, which became a massive blockbuster and made him an overnight sensation across India. The film ran for over a year in many theatres and earned him his first Filmfare Award nomination.

The early 1990s saw him consolidate his stardom with films like Saajan (1991), Patthar Ke Phool (1991), and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) — the latter becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films of its decade.

Rise to Stardom (1994–2009)

Khan diversified his image with more intense, action-oriented roles. Tere Naam (2003) gave him one of his most iconic looks — the "Radhe" hairstyle — which became a cultural phenomenon and was widely imitated across India. He appeared in the critically acclaimed Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) in a supporting role and starred opposite Aishwarya Rai in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999).

The 2010s marked Salman Khan's most commercially dominant phase. Beginning with Dabangg (2010), he established the "Chulbul Pandey" franchise, which became a fan favourite. His films during this period — Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) — collectively earned over ₹5,000 crore at the box office.

Following these records, he delivered the box office hit Sikandar (2025), directed by A. R. Murugadoss. Salman Khan has hosted multiple seasons of the reality television show Bigg Boss — the Indian adaptation of the international Big Brother franchise — since 2010. He has hosted over 15 seasons on Colors TV and JioCinema, making him the longest-running host of any Indian reality show.

He also hosted 10 Ka Dum (Sony Entertainment Television) and has appeared as a guest mentor and judge on various programs. His presence consistently boosts viewership ratings significantly.

Philanthropy — Being Human

In 2007, Salman Khan established the Being Human Foundation, a charitable trust focused on healthcare and education. The foundation runs schools for underprivileged children, operates medical camps, and funds surgeries for those who cannot afford them. It has partnered with hospitals across Maharashtra and Rajasthan to provide free cardiac procedures and cancer treatment.

The foundation also operates Being Human Clothing, a fashion retail brand whose profits are entirely directed toward charitable activities. The brand is sold in over 15 countries including India, the UAE, the USA, and various European markets.
